Ravensong - T. J. Klune (Blog Tour & Review)

Date of Reading: 11/07/2024
Author: T. J. Klune
Publisher: Tor Books
Publication Date: August 1, 2023
Rating: 4.5/5

(This review is part of the blog tour organised by Random Things Tours)

About the book:

Ravensong is the second book in the Green Creek Series, the beloved fantasy romance sensation by New York Times bestselling author TJ Klune, about love, loyalty, betrayal, and family.

“Complex and startling... Green Creek is the perfect setting.” —Charlaine Harris

The Bennett family has a secret: They're not just a family, they're a pack. Ravensong is Gordo Livingstone's story.

Gordo Livingstone never forgot the lessons carved into his skin. Hardened by the betrayal of a pack that left him behind, he sought solace in the garage in his tiny mountain town, vowing never again to involve himself in the affairs of wolves.

It should have been enough.

It was, until the wolves came back, and with them, Mark Bennett. And when his town is caught in the jaws of a beast, Gordo is summoned back into the life that left him.

“Gordo, you must rise. For your pack. For us. I must ask you to become the witch to the wolves.”

Now, a year later, Gordo has once again found himself the witch of the Bennett pack. Green Creek has settled after the death of Richard Collins, and Gordo constantly struggles to ignore Mark and the song that howls between them.

But time is running out. Something is coming. And this time, it’s coming from within.

Review:

After reading 'Wolfsong', the first book in the series and the huge letdown I felt, I was not that enthusiastic about this second book. So what drew me in you might ask. It is Gordo Livingstone's story. Because when all is said and done, this alpha thing sounds terrible. Especially if that is a hereditary thing and is inborn. Joe was never up to the task. And Gordo was the only one against the wolves (even though he joined the pack later) and I loved him. While the first book mentions his past history with Mark, Ravensong delves deeper into the resolution of their story.
The first part was not that intriguing, since it was the repetition of events from 'Wolfsong' in Gordo's perspective. Once you pass that hurdle, the story starts growing on you. No wonder, I found it more captivating than the first book. Klune's writing has notably improved, seamlessly blending humor and terror.  I loved the trio - Rico, Tanner and Chris - the book would have been dull without them.
The love story between Gordo and Mark is almost similar to that of Ox and Joe. Still, I loved that Gordo waited till the last moment to forgive him. Mark definitely needed to do some gruelling for leaving him like that. The book has more action than the previous one culminating in a shocking revelation at the end. The big villain is still out there. But 'Ravensong' proves that together with your chosen family, it is possible to overcome anything.

Heir to Thorn and Flame - Ben Alderson (Blog Tour & Review)

Date of Reading: 3/7/2023
Author: Ben Alderson
Publisher: Second Sky
Publication Date: July 31, 2023
Source: NetGalley
Rating: 3/5

About the book:

Married to a ruthless prince…

For years, Max had to serve and obey the vicious magical nobles. Now he is one of them.

When the heir to the throne attacks him, Max accidentally responds with a lethal burst of magic. Max is certain he will be executed. But his power is too rare and precious for that…

Instead, the king forces him to become the boy he killed, taking on the identity and duties of the heir. That includes an arranged marriage—to the dangerously attractive Prince Camron.

Living a lie, Max knows he can trust no one. Not Camron. And definitely not Simion, a handsome, dragon-riding spy sent to test his loyalty.

As a deadly struggle for power begins and desire sparks, Max must protect his secret and his heart at all costs.

Heir to Thorn and Flame is a passionate and page-turning fantasy romance that will have you reading late into the night. Featuring slow-burn, dark secrets, arranged marriage and found family, it is perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Elise Kova and C.S. Pacat.

Review:

'Heir to Thorn and Flame' is the first book in the War of the Wood series. I am no stranger to Ben Alderson's style and even though this story may not quite reach the heights of  'Lord of Eternal Night', it undeniably serves as a fantastic kick-off to the series. Mages, dragons, familial bonds and treacherous betrayals . . . what is not to like?
Accidentally killing the heir to the throne, Max is forced to wear his mantle and marry Prince Camron. Plagued by uncertainty and torn between loyalties, he finds himself in a precarious position as his parents remain captive in the clutches of his enemies. Whom should he trust? Dangerously attractive Camron or Simion the dragon riding spy or his loyal but secretive friend, Beatrice? Delving further into the plot will only spoil your reading experience, and thus, I better refrain from divulging any more details.
I should warn you though . .. there is sort of a love triangle in the beginning which is almost resolved towards the end. Aaah!! I do hope that the author will pick that plot point again . . . at present my sympathies lay with the (presumed) villain. Sigh! Can't wait to read the next one.

Best Men - Sidney Karger (Blog Tour & Review)

(This review is part of the blog tour organised by Random Things Tours)

About the book:

When two best men in a wedding party fall for each other, they realize love isn't a piece of cake in this hilarious and heartfelt romantic comedy debut by screenwriter Sidney Karger.

Max Moody thought he had everything figured out. He's trying to live his best life in New York City and has the best friend a gay guy could ask for: Paige. She and Max grew up next door to each other in the suburbs of Chicago. She can light up any party. She finishes his sentences. She's always a reliable splunch (they don't like to use the word brunch) partner. But then Max's whole world is turned upside down when Paige suddenly announces some huge news: she's engaged and wants Max to be her man of honour. Max was always the romantic one who imagined he would get married before the unpredictable Paige and is shocked to hear she's ready to settle down. But it turns out there's not just one new man in Paige's life--there are two.

There's the groom, Austin, who's a perfectly nice guy. Then there's his charming, fun and ridiculously handsome gay younger brother, Chasten, who is Austin's best man. As Paige's wedding draws closer, Max, the introverted Midwesterner, and Chasten, the social butterfly East Coaster, realize they're like oil and water. Yet they still have to figure out how to coexist in Paige's life while not making her wedding festivities all about them. But can the tiny romantic spark between these two very different guys transform their best man supporting roles into the leading best men in each other's lives?

Review:
I would rather this book be called 'Best Friends'. For one, romance is just a side plot while the evolving relationship of Max and Paige  takes centre stage. It is also Max Moody's story where Chasten, for sure, has a part to play, but all the same, it is also about Max finding his life's calling. He is such an endearing character it is hard not to like him. Funny, loyal and down to earth -- Max Moody is this and many more. Finding humour in the most awkward situations (the first encounter with Chasten, for instance) he pulls you along in this laugh-out-loud ride.
Max is one of the many things I loved about this book. A character-driven story like this cannot be enjoyed without someone like him. His friendship with Paige is really one of a kind and no wonder he felt threatened by Chasten's arrival in the scene. Chasten is the ideal gay guy, outgoing and smart to boot in contrast to Max who doesn't enjoy crowded events. While their chemistry is undeniable, I am a bit sceptic about Max-Chasten relationship. The whole thing works on the opposites attract concept, but will it make them stick together for an eternity?
So I demand a sequel. I am curious how it turned out for both of them. The road ahead is bound to be bumpy, but that's just another story I can't wait to sink my teeth into.

Total Creative Control - Joanna Chambers & Sally Malcolm (#Review)

Date of Reading: 3/3/2023
Authors: Joanna Chambers & Sally Malcolm
Publication Year: 2021
Rating: 5/5

About the book:

Sunshine PA, meet Grumpy Boss... When fanfic writer Aaron Page landed a temp job with the creator of hit TV show, Leeches, it was only meant to last a week. Three years later, Aaron's still there...

It could be because he loves the creative challenge. It could be because he's a huge Leeches fanboy. It's definitely not because of Lewis Hunter, his extremely demanding, staggeringly rude...and breathtakingly gorgeous boss.

Is it?

Lewis Hunter grew up the hard way and fought for everything he's got. His priority is the show, and personal relationships come a distant second. Besides, who needs romance when you have a steady stream of hot men hopping in and out of your bed?

His only meaningful relationship is with Aaron, his chief confidante and indispensable assistant. And no matter how appealing he finds Aaron's cute boy-next-door charms, Lewis would never risk their professional partnership just to scratch an itch.

But when Lewis finds himself trapped at a hilariously awful corporate retreat, Aaron is his only friend and ally. As the professional lines between them begin to blur, their simmering attraction starts to sizzle

... And they're both about to get burned.

Review:

As an ardent fan of 'Enlightenment' series, I am all too familiar with the style of Joanna Chambers. Still, I was skeptical of her shift from the regency era to the contemporary and that too as a collaboration. No wonder it was on my TBR for so long. It is a recent review I chanced upon on one of my Facebook groups (gushing about how amazing it is) that propelled me to finally give it a chance. So this review is my paying it forward. Dear reader, do not make the same mistake I did by nearly skipping over this wonderful story.
Good slow-burn romances with the right amount of angst are always hard to come by. That is exactly why this felt like unearthing a treasure. Lewis and Aaron, boss and PA, could be cliche characters, but under the deft hands of Chambers and Malcolm, they have gained a new sheen. Their banter makes you pine for more and the couple's chemistry is just off the charts. The setting that revolves around the hit TV show 'Leeches' merges so perfectly with the storyline that I am left with no more words of praise.
If you have a penchant for mm romances, indulge yourself a little bit. This hilarious story will leave you wanting more.

Reforged - Seth Haddon (Review)

Rating: 4.5/5

About the book:

Since time immemorial the warriors of the Paladin Order have harnessed arcane powers to protect their rulers. For Balen, who has given up his chance at love and fought his way to the top of the Paladin Order, there can be no greater honour than to serve his king. But when assassins annihilate the royal family, Balen suddenly finds himself sworn to serve the very man he abandoned.

Now with their nation threatened by enemies both within and outside the kingdom, Balen must fight hidden traitors and unnatural assassins, while also contending with the biting wit and dangerous charm of young King Zavrius. To save themselves and their nation they will have to put aside their past and reforge that trust they lost so long ago.

Review:

If it is not for the preview available in GoodReads, I would have passed over this book, all thanks to that cover which gives off a different vibe. Let me clarify it for you then. It is not a spicy heated love story as implied (apart from two scenes towards the end), but a very slow romance with ample political intrigue in the mix. It was like reading The Captive Prince series again, all in one book. The story might be different, but the teasing, eluding king won't fail to remind you of a certain prince.
Balen and King Zavrius were sweethearts once, but he gave up his love for the prince for his career as a Paladin. Fate had other plans though. Zavrius's siblings are killed making him the last of the royal line and therefore the new king Balen is sworn to protect. With their old chemistry still intact, this has proven to be a much more laborious task. Oh, Zavrius sure makes him pay for ditching him . . . and the angst was worth waiting for.
The battle scenes are another factor that I enjoyed. Haddon has a way of pulling us to the fights and the twists that come one after the other keep you always at the edge. Mallet and Lance, our sidekicks/brothers provide the necessary comic relief. If I could only have another story featuring these brothers! Lance, you sure are awesome!
All in all an action-packed, swoon-worthy romance with hilarious moments that will give you an irresistible time. Highly recommended!

Review:

I have been on the hunt for an mm paranormal romance and chanced upon this accidentally. I was sceptical at first since it is the first book in the 'Midnight Guardian' series. A cliffhanger is not something everyone is fond of. But rest assured, even though the story is not complete, it doesn't leave behind that much of a suspense . . . just the right amount so we can peacefully wait for the next one without going bonkers.
From the very beginning, the story focuses on Jonathan and Vic's attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding the murders in Cress Haven. Sure, they get close with so many near death experiences, but romance takes a back seat most of the time. I can only hope that the author has reserved all the funny bits for the next book. What we witness here is the start of a very promising relationship and I can't wait to hear more.
I should not be forgetting my favourite character though. She might be intended as Vic's sidekick, but she had outlived her role and I don't think she is planning to remain as a supporting cast. Brave, spirited, sharp tongued Alyse, let's see how the outside world treats you. Maybe you get to have your own story this time.

The First Man - Alex Kelly (Blog Tour & Review)

Date of Reading: 9/3/2021
Author: Alex Kelly
Publication Date: February 25, 2021
Rating: 4/5

(This review is part of the blog tour organised by Rachel's Random Resources)

About the book:

Shane

Do you want to know what it means to live like me?
It means being forced not to look at him, not to touch him, not to be left alone in the same room as him.
Not to seek him out. Not to want him.
Not to love him.
Do you know how it feels to spend your entire life pretending to be someone else? Do you know what it’s like to love someone who doesn’t want to be loved?
I’ll tell you how it feels.
It feels as if you’re living in constant torment: you know which path you should follow, but you also know that, if you follow that path, you can never turn back.
And I can’t do that to him.
Every day I come back because I know that he’s waiting for me.
Every day I promise him that he will never have to live without me.

Andy

Do you know what it means to live like me?
It means being forced not to touch him, not to kiss him, not to be able to leave the room while he’s still in it.
Not to breathe him in, not to lust after him.
Not to love him.
Do you know how it feels to spend your entire life pretending to be someone else? Do you know what it’s like to love the only person you’re not allowed to love?
I’ll tell you how it works.
You can’t seem to feel anything other than him; when you walk away, you know that you’re turning your back on the only thing that’s good in your life.
Yet you still walk away.
Every day I leave, knowing that he will be standing there, watching.
Every day I ask him to promise me that I will never have to live without him.

Review:

I have mixed feelings on this one. Since the story doesn't take place in the 16th or 18th century or in a brutal society that looks down on homosexuality with hostility, I still can't fathom what all this fuss is about. Couldn't they really confess their love and get it over with? Well, nothing is as simple as that. Inner demons are always the worst.
Shane and Andy have been in a secret relationship for seventeen years now, emphasis on the 'secret' here. Since it is a closely-knit community, keeping it hidden means, it is more or less an emotional, non-touchy relationship. Why can't they come out of the closet? Several reasons: Andy's family is not well-liked and he may lose customers from his pub. Shane, on the other hand, is from a wealthy background and is not sure about his family's reaction to this piece of news. Then there is the fact that it all started when one is a minor. Even though it is the said minor who initiated everything, will anyone really believe it? So you see, it is not easy even in this century.
Told from the perspectives of both protagonists, we get to see the agonies and frustrations they undergo and our first reservations on them slowly fade to a sense of pathos. It does end happily but the reality this story addresses can never be forgotten.

Date Me, Bryson Keller - Kevin van Whye

Date of Reading: 30/06/2020
Author: Kevin van Whye
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers
Publication Date: May 19, 2020
Rating: 4.5/5

About the book:

What If It's Us meets To All the Boys I've Loved Before in this upbeat and heartfelt boy-meets-boy romance that feels like a modern twist on a '90s rom-com!

Everyone knows about the dare: Each week, Bryson Keller must date someone new--the first person to ask him out on Monday morning. Few think Bryson can do it. He may be the king of Fairvale Academy, but he's never really dated before.

Until a boy asks him out, and everything changes.

Kai Sheridan didn't expect Bryson to say yes. So when Bryson agrees to secretly go out with him, Kai is thrown for a loop. But as the days go by, he discovers there's more to Bryson beneath the surface, and dating him begins to feel less like an act and more like the real thing. Kai knows how the story of a gay boy liking someone straight ends. With his heart on the line, he's awkwardly trying to navigate senior year at school, at home, and in the closet, all while grappling with the fact that this "relationship" will last only five days. After all, Bryson Keller is popular, good-looking, and straight . . . right?

Kevin van Whye delivers an uplifting and poignant coming-out love story that will have readers rooting for these two teens to share their hearts with the world--and with each other.

Review:

There was a lot of hype around this book and I am not in the habit of skipping a high school romance (as a teacher this is one my ways to get the student side of things). Sure, the situation is different in my place, but students are students and one could really identify the predicament Kai is under. If your aim is to finish your school years being invisible, then the safest course is to remain in the closet. But should you?
Kai Sheridan doesn't have a lot of talents. He barely squeezes through maths and his performance in drama class is equally terrible, unless you count the scriptwriting. That, by the way, is his speciality: writing (ooh! that is my ideal pupil). Nothing exciting happens until in a fit of anger he asks Bryson Keller out for that week. He gets to date him for five days.
The book barely covers two weeks and who knew so much could happen at such a short span of time. I loved the way the author broke the chapters into different days effortlessly merging Kai's family background and the story of his friends along with his growing bond with Bryson. In a world of bullying and homophobia, Bryson Keller surely stands out. He is far more mature than his years and the same goes for Kai's sister, Yaz. I have never seen a thirteen-year-old showing such intelligence and, without a doubt, she is one of my favourite characters.
The final showdown was also really worth the wait. And I totally agree with you Yaz; the trope where the main character decides to give up on the person he loves in the name of protecting him is definitely the worst. So huge thank you for the sisterly intervention. You are the best!
On the whole, 'Date Me, Bryson Keller' is a story that contains multitudes. The angst of a closeted gay teen, bullying, estranged families and above all hope and humour . . . yes, it's all there. Recommended to all teenagers and to those who are still a teenager at heart!

The Mixtape to my Life - Jake Martinez

Date of Reading: 12/06/2020
Author: Jake Martinez
Publisher: Deep Hearts YA
Publication Date: March 27, 2020
Rating: 4/5

About the book:

Justin Ortega might as well be starring in his very own coming-of-age 80s movie. If only he could find his dream boy to pull up in front of his house in a red convertible and sweep him off his feet, already! At seventeen years young, he isn’t quite Mexican enough for his South Texas town; isn’t manly enough for his father; can sometimes be too much of a smart mouth for his mother, and as for the other kids at school—let’s just say he’d be cast as the quiet nerd with a heart of gold…and an ear for music.

The one solace Justin has is his love of 80s hair metal bands, which he listens to on his beloved Sony Walkman. The songs, lyrics, and melody keep him just sane enough to escape the pressures of school and help navigate the hurdles life brings. Especially with the doozy this year is shaping up to be. Not only does he have to try out for a captain position which is rightfully his, but his best friend has found a new girlfriend, leaving Justin to fend for himself in a school where he’s mostly known as simply Coconut.

Enter Dominic Mendoza. Sweet, funny, and a blast from his past, the hunky football player has moved in next door. Justin could never forget how Dominic protected him in the eighth grade, nor the way Dominic made him feel, then…and now.

Except, this isn’t a movie. Confusion, friendship, and love won’t guarantee a happy ending unless Justin can learn to accept himself for who he truly is. Hairbands and all.

Review:

I do love coming-of-age stories. The unpredictable future, pressure from peers and the desire for recognition . . . teenage years are the worst. Sigh! But you are going to be a hard nut to crack once you successfully manage to thwart the crisis. Quite predictably reading these stories never fail to produce in me the satisfying smirk of a veteran.
This is the story of Justin Ortega, who as per his teacher's opinion cannot even pronounce his name correctly. In other words, he is called a coconut. His only comfort is his music, at least no taunts can be heard if you play it loud enough. Being gay and not manly enough for his father is just another nail to the coffin. Yup! Pretty much everything sucks for him until his dream guy makes a reappearance.
Set in 1994, we are exposed to a society that is not tolerant of gays. But there is no outdated feeling either since the situation is still the same in many parts of the world. I would have loved their stories to be expanded a bit more but the 190 pages novel still gives you a glimpse of the struggles the couple goes through. Their rebellious acts can be termed immature, but considering the circumstances, that is predictable.
I really enjoyed this quick read and the 80's songs that permeate throughout the story was a real bonus. A teenage boy standing up for himself is always a pleasure to watch. Happy reading!

Camp - Lev A. C. Rosen (Blog Tour)

Date of Reading: 23/05/2020
Author: Lev A. C. Rosen
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Publication date: May 26, 2020
Source: NetGalley
Rating: 4.5/5

(This review is part of the blog tour organised by Fantastic Flying Book Club)

About the book:

From the author of the acclaimed Jack of Hearts (and other parts) comes a sweet and sharp screwball comedy that critiques the culture of toxic masculinity within the queer community.

Sixteen-year-old Randy Kapplehoff loves spending the summer at Camp Outland, a camp for queer teens. It's where he met his best friends. It's where he takes to the stage in the big musical. And it's where he fell for Hudson Aaronson-Lim - who's only into straight-acting guys and barely knows not-at-all-straight-acting Randy even exists.

This year, though, it's going to be different. Randy has reinvented himself as 'Del' - buff, masculine, and on the market. Even if it means giving up show tunes, nail polish, and his unicorn bed sheets, he's determined to get Hudson to fall for him.

But as he and Hudson grow closer, Randy has to ask himself how much is he willing to change for love. And is it really love anyway, if Hudson doesn't know who he truly is?

Review:

Is this one of my regular reads? Absolutely not. Changing yourself to get the man (or woman) is something abhorrent in my dictionary. Someone who is not able to love oneself can never find love. So why did I bother reading this novel? Because I wanted to tame this judgemental devil living inside me. As one of the counsellors says in the story, everyone is allowed to make their own mistakes. Isn't that the way we learn?
'Camp' offers a unique take on an oft used plotline with Camp Outland as its setting. It is not every day we get to read a book with an all queer cast and that makes this all the more special. Sure, it is not possible to cover every aspect of the queer spectrum, but considering the length of the novel, the author has done a remarkable job in giving representation to a wide variety of gender orientations. This camp for queer teens is nothing short of paradise.
The main story, as you have guessed already, is the love story between Randy and Hudson. Randy is determined to win over Hudson this year and thus his complete makeover as Del, a masc completely different from the femme personality of Randy. Well, we don't need an oracle to know where his crazy plan will lead to but what matters is the changes that come through this performance.
Simple though it may seem the novel addresses a series of issues a queer teen faces from his own family and also from the society. Seeing that we don't have that many great books in the LGBT genre, this book, without a doubt, is a rare gem. A pure delight from start to finish!

Project Hero - Briar Prescott

Date of Reading: 16/04/2020
Author: Briar Prescott
Publication Date: March 26, 2020
Source: BookSirens
Rating: 4.5/5

About the book:

What if you accidentally fell in love with the right guy?

Andy:
If my life was a movie, I would be the sidekick. Not an especially promising start when my plan is to finally let my best friend know I have a crush on him. No worries, though. I have a plan. I just need a complete makeover. Change everything about myself so that when Falcon returns from his summer vacation, he can finally see I’m the love of his life. I totally know what I’m doing here.
Well, not really.
If I knew what I was doing, I wouldn’t look like every nerd cliché wrapped into one awkward package.
In short, I’m screwed.
But then Law Anderson enters the picture…

Law:
It’s all very simple. I need somebody to tutor my hockey team, and Andy needs somebody to help him with his crush. Sounds like a match made in heaven.
Only the more time I spend with Andy, the more I like this quirky guy who makes me laugh, and pretty soon I’m the one who’s tutoring Andy in way more than we initially agreed upon.
It’s fine.
I have it all under control.
But as weeks pass and the chemistry between us turns explosive, I’m starting to think that I might be in way over my head with Andy.
If only I could make Andy realize that he doesn’t need to change himself for love. If only I could make Andy see that he just needs to be with somebody who has considered him perfect all along…

Review:

Not recognising the right person right in front of you . . . definitely a tale as old as time, but it never loses its appeal. This story incorporates this particular trope in the cutest way imaginable. Romance involving a physics nerd with a wry sense of humour and a handsome (former) hockey player who is so down to earth is surely a recipe for a swoon worthy love story. And that is what 'Project Hero' delivers.
The novel made me recall why I love reading romance. It's fun, light and within no time we get into an easy rapport with the characters. Narrated through dual POV, the novel will soon have you in a giggling fit, especially whenever Andy comes into the picture. Even with his low self esteem and fear of public speaking, the guy is nothing short of hilarious. Law Anderson is right: he doesn't need to change to find love.
I loved the way story progressed culminating in a beautiful epilogue set after ten years. What didn't sit well with me is the sex education part, that felt too cliched. But apart from that minor blip, this had been a hugely enjoyable story. Highly recommended!

Briar Prescott is a work in progress. She swears too much, doesn't eat enough leafy greens and binge watches too much television. It's okay, though. One of these days she'll get a hang of that adulting thing.

Probably.
Maybe.
She hopes.

Someday, Someday - Emma Scott

Date of Reading: 13/03/2020
Author: Emma Scott
Publication Date: November 24, 2019

Rating: 5/5

About the book:

How long would you wait for love?

Max Kaufman was kicked out of his home as a teen and his life has been an uphill battle ever since. From addiction and living on the streets to recovery and putting himself through nursing school, he’s spent the last ten years rebuilding his shattered sense of self. Now he’s taken a job as a private caretaker to Edward Marsh III, the president and CEO of one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Max soon learns Marsh’s multi-billion-dollar empire is a gold and diamond-encrusted web of secrets and lies.

The longer Max works and lives with the Marsh family, the tighter the secrets tangle around him. And his heart—that he’s worked so hard to protect—falls straight into the hands of the distant, cold, and beautiful son of a dynasty…

Silas Marsh is set to inherit the family fortune, but his father is determined his heir be the “perfect” son. Before Silas can take over the company and end its shady business practices, he must prove himself worthy…and deny his true nature.

Silas must choose: stand up to his father by being true to himself and his undeniable feelings for Max. Or pretend to be someone he is not in order to inherit everything. Even if it means sacrificing a chance at happiness and real love.

Review:

     Wow! Wow! Wow!!!
I postponed writing this review to give my overactive heart some respite. Still, I am not sure how much coherent I could be. Telling that this had been an emotionally overwhelming read is an understatement. I laughed, wept (being both happy and sad), got angry . . . yes, I am practically an emotional mess now.
Emma Scott has dedicated this book to "everyone still fighting for the basic human right to love who you want to love without prejudice, censure, or torment". She says this is her small contribution to this end and in my eyes, her voice had been heard loud and clear. The story deals with a lot of issues: homophobia, drug addiction, conversion therapy and PTSD are to name quite a few. There is even one character with Asperger's.
Writing a novel addressing all these issues is quite a challenge but Scott has done it splendidly. Everything had its place and nothing felt unrealistic. The love story links all the details with precision, making the author's crafting skills shine throughout. Afterall a Cinderella story where both the protagonists are in benefit will melt even an iron core heart.
Max and Silas, our gorgeous Greek God level leading characters have gatecrashed into my heart from the very beginning; I don't think they are planning to leave anytime soon. The way they were helping each other, tackling their emotional baggage . . . makes one happy to know them. I couldn't leave Eddie from this either, the eldest Marsh boy living in the Dickensian era. I say, my good man, you are the best big brother anyone can hope for.
Yup, that's it. I am going to read this again. So if you love m/m romance look no further; this, without a doubt, is one of the best.
